Original issue: barrettruth/canola.nvim#359
Original author: Doodler8888
Original date: 2026-06-15T18:17:40Z

Prerequisites

  • I have searched existing issues
  • I have updated to the latest main branch
  • This report targets the main branch, the backwards-compatible oil track
  • I ran the repro below with branch = 'main' left intact

Neovim version

NVIM v0.13.0-dev-726+ga69f2db773
Build type: Release
LuaJIT 2.1.1774896198
Run "nvim -V1 -v" for more info

Operating system

fedora 44

Description

Completion menu appears away from the cursor when i start typing something in oil buffers, which also makes the cursor to jump between the location of the menu and the place where i type.

https://forge.barrettruth.com/attachments/98f9af1a-b50e-494d-8b67-74c1b0fef105

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch neovim with the repro file (nvim -u repro.lua)
  2. Open any directory with Oil <path>
  3. Enter the insert mode and start typing at the end of filenames to trigger completion menu

Minimal reproduction

vim.o.complete = '.,w,b,o'
vim.o.autocomplete = true
vim.o.autocompletedelay = 250

vim.env.LAZY_STDPATH = '.repro'
load(vim.fn.system('curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/folke/lazy.nvim/main/bootstrap.lua'))()
require('lazy').setup({
  spec = {
    {
      'barrettruth/canola.nvim',
      branch = 'main',
      config = function()
        require('oil').setup({})
      end,
    },
  },
})

Unfortunately this is an issue with upstream vim. I'm trying to fix this now. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Is it a bug in vim or some incompatibility issue? I can fill a bug report for vim, if that's a bug.
